As I Lay Dying fue formado en 2001 por el vocalista Tim Lambesis luego de dejar la banda "Society's Finest" donde tocaba la guitarra. Como un trío con Evan White y el baterista Jordan Mancino comenzaron a tocar y luego de completar el grupo fueron contratados por la discográfica Pluto Records. es una banda de metalcore de San Diego, U.S.A. El nombre de la banda deriva del libro Mientras agonizo (en inglés As I Lay Dying) del autor William Faulkner. La banda recientemente ha ganado el título Ultimate Metal God (traducido como "Dios del Metal) de los premios de la cadena MTV2 "All That Rocks", venciendo a bandas como Lamb Of God y Mastodon. "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes" fue grabado en junio de 2001. Es claro que su sonido característico sería encontrado en futuros lanzamientos.
