Every Time I Die - New Junk Aesthetic (2009)

Every Time I Die became one of America's more popular metalcore bands by injecting its unrelentingly brutal, snap tight brand of heavy music with heavy doses of humor and Southern stoner rock style chugging guitar. New Junk Aesthetic, the group debut on Epitaph Records (after a long tenure on indie Ferret Music), found the group further refining its signature approach with a new sonic clarity and an occasional focus on melodic hooks. That said, the Buffalo, based combo remains bone crushingly intense, with songs such as "The Marvelous Slut," "Organ Grinder," and "Who Invented the Russian Soldier" characterized by math rock like stop on a dime rhythmic shifts and vocalist Keith Buckley surprisingly comprehensible throat shedding. Other tracks, however, such as "Turtles All the Way Down" and first single "Wanderlust" draw a bit more from a traditional rock bag, with radio ready, old school, grunge esque choruses, and catchy, relatively straightforward six string riffs. Throughout, Every Time I Die sounds energized and passionate, delivering its blend of old and new sounds with a directness that gives the ferocious music an unusually broad appeal.

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon (2005)

If this album is, as the press materials insist, a "party friendly free for all," then there something seriously wrong with parties these days. That's not to say that the music isn't impressive, just that it's hard to imagine chatting up a girl or laughing with friends while this album is playing anywhere in the vicinity. Every Time I Die prominently features groove based Southern rock elements in its arrangements, but that's about where the fun ends: occasional (and brief) sung melodies arise now and then, but for the most part this is a straight ahead exercise in hoarse screaming and dirty, bludgeoning guitars. Gutter Phenomenon opens with one of the album's strongest tracks, a blistering Math Hardcore raveup titled "Apocalypse Now and Then" (they have a thing for cute titles; another song on this set is titled "Guitarred and Feathered"). "Kill the Music" is a bit more generic in its tight heaviosity, and "Bored Stiff" comes across as just a bunch of yelling for the sake of yelling. But "Champing at the Bit" actually exposes something approaching a pop sensibility lurking beneath the band's bristling aggression, and "Pretty Dirty" features nifty stop, start rhythms and some sustained examples of actual singing. Overall, not bad.

Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! (2003)

While this may be the sophomore full length album from New York Every Time I Die, it hardly falls into the sophomore slump of which so many acts seem plagued. Instead, this five piece has taken a smart, safe step with some variations of its Metalcore style, but keeps things primarily intact, thus not alienating too many fans. One variation that has been infused into the sound is an occasional Southern rock guitar sound, another is vocals that aren't always at a heart piercing scream: occasionally there is a singing melody. However, their overall sound on Hot Damn! is comparable to the likes of Norma Jean or Drowningman, while never being derivative. The band has also continued to work upon the intriguing tongue in cheek lyrics for which it's become known. With lines like "Maybe someday they'll find that I've washed up...Drag the lake, you'll find it's full of love" "Floater", the members of Every Time I Die continue to show that they've got more in their music than just something for moshing.

Every Time I Die - Burial Plot Bidding War (2000)

Every Time I Die began turning heads in the hardcore community with their debut release, Burial Plot Bidding War, which was released on a small independent Canadian label called Good Fellow Records. Ferret Records caught wind of this phenomenal upstate New York quintet and quickly secured them with a record deal, and soon thereafter Last Night in Town emerged. This album is a cathartic, chaotic release, finding Every Time I Die careening from metalcore crunch to exhausting screamo and even meandering into slightly emotional melodic singing akin to the highly touted Glassjaw. Technically perfect music that rivals even Dillinger Escape Plan layered with the most insane vocal screams is a formula for success for these five men, as the CD never loses its steam. In all reality, as it progresses the listener will go from being stunned to outright jaw-dropping incredulity. This album is quite comparable to Drowningman in the sense that each band can so flawlessly twist your mind into a pretzel and then straighten it back out with the occasional melody. The two groups also share an obvious tongue-in-cheek mentality that makes their music all that much more enjoyable. "Enter Without Knocking and Notify the Police" even starts out sounding slightly similar to something System of a Down would churn out, which is certainly an unusual comparison, yet quite true. "Nothing Dreadful Ever Happens" features a piano, sampling, and could almost be considered a ballad if it didn't contort itself into a sinister succubus of sound that feeds off your hatred and emotion only to seduce you back for more. The reluctance to remove the album from your stereo is surely proof enough that this is one of the most potentially amazing bands inhabiting the metalcore scene, and if the group continues creating music this spectacular they will rise to the top in no time.
